Social Media Contract

Social Media can be a great benefit or it can cause great harm to self and others. Cases of abuse abound in the US today, and many young people are being harmed in the process. This contract is aimed at making students and parents aware of the issues and to provide guidelines for proper usage of social media.

As a BC student, it is your responsibility to represent yourself and your school in a positive manner at all times, and this applies to all forms of social media and electronic communications.

Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and other social media sites have increased in popularity globally, and are used by the majority of students here at BC. Please remember that email is considered a social media/communication tool. Students should be aware that third parties, including the media, faculty, colleges, and future employers can easily access your profiles and view all personal information. Most of this information is permanent in the cloud, so please be careful that what you post is positive and appropriate.

Examples of inappropriate and offensive cyber behaviors include depictions or presentations of the following:

  • Photos, videos, comments or posters showing the personal use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, etc.
  • Photos, videos, and comments that are of a sexual nature. This includes links to websites of a pornographic nature and other inappropriate material.
  • Content online that is derogatory, demeaning or threatening toward any other individual, entity or group (examples: derogatory comments regarding any institution, race, gender or religion (to name a few).
  • Depictions of unacceptable, violent or illegal activities (examples: hazing, sexual harassment, physical assault, gambling, discrimination, vandalism).
  • Any online photo of self or others without clothing is illegal and must be reported to the police. Minors in California can be prosecuted and listed as sex offenders for this offense.
  • Any unauthorized photo or video of any type of another student, employee (or family members thereof) is strictly prohibited.
  • Cyber bullying of any type is strictly prohibited.
  • Any other cyber activity, which is deemed as misconduct in the judgment of the BC Administration, and/or by virtue of our policies, will be subject to school policy and applicable laws.

For your own safety, please keep the following recommendations in mind as you participate in social media websites:

  • Set your security settings so that only your friends can view your profile.
  • You should not post your email, home address, local address, telephone number(s), or other personal information as it could lead to unwanted attention, stalking, identity theft, etc.
  • Be aware of whom you add as a friend to your site – many people are looking to take advantage of young people.
  • If you are ever in doubt of the appropriateness of your social media usage, consider if Jesus would do it - and if your parents and grandparents would approve of it.

We strongly encourage all BC students to THINK before they post, so ask yourself if what you are about to post is…

  • T – true?
  • H – helpful?
  • I – informative?
  • N – necessary?
  • K – kind?
